• Easier to keep in contact with people over seas, or those people don't see often
• Faster way of contacting compared to email, snail mail. This is due to people being directly connected, i.e. both are online at the same time
• Free in the sense that you don't have to pay any more other than the internet connection
• Can have a large amount of people "talking" at once

Negative

• Possibility of lack of security of conversations being opened by others who access the computer used - i.e. can access the folders that contain the saved files
• Lack of control of what is sent between users - insults, bullying etc etc
